2 Deceptive Engagement

Several years ago, when I was 25,

I lived with one of my closest friends in a three-bedroom house.

Our friendship started to dwindle as he moved in with another friend,

leaving me alone most of the time.

This particular night,

my friend decided to stay at our place and went to bed early.

Meanwhile, I stayed up late, engrossed in YouTube videos, as I usually did.

Our house faced a couple of neighbors who had become increasingly troublesome.

They would frequently come to our door,

seeking handouts and making bizarre requests.

They often asked for unusual things like filling an old Mountain Dew bottle with water because their water got shut off.

They even had the audacity to ask for beer or a single dollar.

Their persistence was relentless, knocking on our door even when we ignored them.

I would sometimes catch them scavenging cigarette butts from the ashtray

or peering through the door's peephole, trying to spot us inside.

On this particular night, I was on the couch,

smoking and watching YouTube when I heard a knock at the door.

I rolled my eyes, already anticipating who it might be.

I checked the peephole, and unsurprisingly,

it was the boyfriend from next door standing on my porch.

It was 11 PM, an odd hour to visit.

Curiosity got the best of me, and I opened the door to see what he wanted.

He seemed distressed and said,

"I just wanted to come over here and see if you would help me film my engagement.

I have the ring in my pocket, and I need you to follow me to my backyard and help film it for me."

Confused but intrigued, I congratulated him and told him I'd join him shortly,

but I needed to put on my shoes first.

I shut the door, quickly locked it, and ran to the back room that overlooked their backyard.

I peeked through the blinds to see the setup, only to find absolute darkness.

There were no decorations or any sign of an engagement.

Alarmed, I woke up my roommate and told her what was happening.

"Screw that," she said,

and we both headed back to the door.

As the boyfriend started banging on the door, I looked through the peephole again,

but I couldn't see anything at first.

It was only when he moved his eye away from the peephole that I realized it had been obstructed.

Instinctively, I turned around and pressed my back against the door.

My roommate hurried back, armed with two wire hangers for protection.

We huddled together, waiting until he finally left.

Terrified but unsure if we were overreacting,

we decided to do a drive-by in my roommate's car.

Their front door was always open, and they lacked blinds, making it easy to see inside their house.

We cautiously passed by, peering into their living room.

To our astonishment, the couple was sitting on the couch, but now there was an older man with them.

They were all staring at the wall in an eerie manner.

Frightened, we sped off into the night and sought refuge at a friend's house.

From that moment on,

I never answered the door for either of them again.

Days later, I returned from work to find an older lady parked in their driveway.

As I got out of my car, she approached me and asked if I knew where the neighbors were.

I informed her that I hadn't seen them for a while.

She revealed herself as the owner of the house

and explained that they were months behind on rent.

Finally, she had come to evict them.

Curiosity piqued, she entered the house only to discover a scene of utter devastation.

Needles and garbage were strewn everywhere,

walls were riddled with holes, and human waste covered the floors.

I expressed my sympathy for what she had to endure

but conveyed my relief that they were finally gone.

Though I'm not entirely sure what was happening that night,

I'm grateful that I didn't follow the neighbor to the backyard.

It turned out there was a much darker secret

lurking behind their deceptive engagement request.
