A Summer Stroll's Encounter

I'm a man in my early 30s

and the story took place when I was a teenager during the summer of 2005.

My cousin, Alex, and my friend, Mark, came over to my house to hang out one weekend afternoon.

This was a regular thing ever since we were kids.

I was quarantined going on 15 at the time, and Alex had just turned 13.

It was a beautiful summer afternoon, so the three of us decided to take a stroll around my neighborhood.

I should mention that I have a physical disability and rely on a power chair to get around.

Anyway, Alex, Mark, and I started our stroll.

I don't remember how long we were walking around,

but as we returned to the street I lived on, we encountered a strange older man.

He started talking to us, asking what we were up to and if we were siblings.

Initially, I thought he was a neighbor of mine,

and I assumed my dad might have known him as well.

So, I explained that we were cousins just taking a stroll. Then he started asking about my disability.

At that point, it didn't raise any red flags for me,

so I simply explained that I was born this way.

Suddenly, he began rubbing my legs and told me that he could fix them, that I would be able to walk.

Deep down, I knew something was off,

so I politely declined his offer, saying there was nothing he could do to help me.

Alex and Mark exchanged worried glances, clearly thinking the same thing:

"Is this guy for real?"

Despite our skepticism, the man persisted,

trying to convince me that he could help by massaging my legs to make me walk.

I think he eventually realized that we weren't scared of him,

so he pointed to the house right in front of us and said,

"I live in this house.

Tell your parents about my offer and let them think it over."

Trying to keep the situation calm, I agreed and said, "Okay,"

but in my mind, I knew I wasn't going to say a word to anyone.

Alex and I made up an excuse about needing to get home,

and the man asked where I lived.

I pointed randomly in a direction and said, "Over there."

He bought it, and finally, he let us go,

but not before reminding me to inform my parents about his offer.

As soon as we were a few yards away from the man, Alex and I ran back home as fast as possible.

We looked back, and he had vanished.

Breathing heavily, we entered the backyard of my house,

relieved to find my mom and aunt inside.

We took a moment to catch our breaths and then laughed off the whole situation.

We both agreed not to tell anyone about it.

At that time, I wasn't that scared of the encounter,

but looking back on it now, it's really frightening to think about,

especially as a physically disabled person.

We were vulnerable targets for predators.

The moral of the story is to always be self-aware of your surroundings

and never engage in conversation with someone you don't know personally,

even if you think you might know them through another person.

It's just not worth the risk.
