Back in the town of Meadowbrook,
Halloween was a highly anticipated event for kids of all ages.
It was a night filled with spooky decorations, creative costumes, and of course,
trick-or-treating.
For a group of friends from Meadowbrook Middle School,
this particular Halloween marked a bittersweet milestone.
Thirteen-year-old Alex, along with their friends Sarah and Mark,
knew that it would be their last year of trick-or-treating.
Once they entered high school,
they feared the potential bullying they might face if they continued the tradition.
Determined to make their final Halloween memorable,
they devised a brilliant plan they believed would yield a massive candy haul.
They observed the trick-or-treating patterns in their neighborhood.
The younger children would start early and be off the streets by 5:30 PM.
The older kids, like Alex and their friends, would venture out unsupervised,
collecting candy until around 8:00 to 8:30 PM.
It was during this window that they hatched their scheme.
Between 8:30 and 9:00 PM, when most trick-or-treaters had already finished,
Alex and their friends would swoop in on the houses and gather the remaining candy.
Convinced that homeowners would gladly give away their surplus sweets rather than keeping them, they were optimistic about their plan.
However, reality didn't align with their expectations.
Contrary to their hopes, they received less candy than the average trick-or-treater.
Homeowners, who thought they were done for the night, reluctantly answered the door again.
Nonetheless, they managed to stumble upon a few houses that hadn't been completely depleted of treats.
They walked away with a decent haul, though not as impressive as they had anticipated.
As they made their way back home, a peculiar house caught their attention.
Nestled slightly off the main residential streets, it seemed they had overlooked it before.
Curiosity piqued, they approached the house, noticing its exquisitely decorated front porch.
The porch was adorned with fake cobwebs, and police tape mockingly warned visitors away.
Pumpkins dotted the area, and a realistic grave with a skeleton emerging from the soil mesmerized them.
However, it was the two large bowls of candy that truly captured their attention.
Signs above the bowls invited them to help themselves.
Even from a distance, they could see the abundance of candy inside.
Eagerly, they advanced up the driveway, their palms sweaty with anticipation.
But as they drew nearer, their excitement was tinged with unease.
Something about the mannequin-like figure propped against the low wall beside the porch seemed unnervingly real.
While the copious amount of fake blood near it raised doubts about its authenticity, it was difficult to dismiss.
As Alex stepped onto the porch steps, their friends reassured them, insisting it was merely an elaborate prank.
Fueled by this misguided confidence, Alex approached the mannequin-like figure.
Suddenly, to their horror,
the figure raised its head, extended its arm toward Alex, and uttered a ghostly plea for help.
Terrified, they fled as fast as their legs could carry them.
They stopped a safe distance away, their minds reeling from the chilling encounter.
Disagreement ensued among the friends as they tried to comprehend the situation.
Alex, convinced of the figure's authenticity, insisted on calling 911 for help,
while their skeptical friend argued it was a cruel prank.
Cell phones were not yet commonplace among children, so Alex had to find a nearby house and frantically knock on the door for assistance.
Worried that their plea might be mistaken for a prank, they managed to convey the urgency of the situation to the homeowner, who promptly called the fire department.
Armed with kitchen towels, the homeowner accompanied Alex back to the scene.
Upon arrival, the homeowner confirmed the presence of the injured individual near the stairs and urged the friends to run home to their parents.
Though the urgency in her voice made them feel as though they were in trouble,
they soon realized she was concerned for their well-being, not reprimanding them.
The fire department arrived swiftly, treating the injured man who had been alone at home.
He had slipped and fallen in the kitchen while holding a knife, accidentally impaling himself.
In a desperate attempt to find help, he had ventured outside, hoping to encounter trick-or-treaters who could call 911.
Unfortunately, his condition worsened, and he collapsed near the porch just moments before the friends arrived.
Unbeknownst to them, their quick thinking and bravery had saved his life.
They were hailed as heroes and praised for their selflessness.
At the Thanksgiving Fair that year, Alex, Sarah, and Mark received Little Hero medals,
celebrating their extraordinary act of courage.
In retrospect, Alex found solace in the fact that their scariest childhood experience resulted in a happy ending.
The incident didn't haunt or traumatize them; instead,
it became a testament to their resilience and compassion.
