Halloween of 2019 remains etched in my memory as the most horrifying night, I've ever experienced.
Residing in Australia, where Halloween isn't celebrated with great fervor,
we seldom received more than a handful of trick-or-treaters—around five or six at most.
Despite my parents' disapproval,
I cherished Halloween and took charge of decorating the house and distributing candy.
That year,
Halloween coincided with a stormy school night.
The downpour began shortly after six o'clock, rendering my decoration efforts futile.
Against my better judgment, I still waited in the living room, watching "The Conjuring" to pass the time. Approximately an hour and a half later, a message from my friend, M, popped up on our group chat.
He suggested we indulge in some mischievous trick-or-treating.
At first, I was perplexed,
as we hadn't engaged in such activities for over five years.
Nevertheless, since no one had come knocking on our door, I thought it could make the night more enjoyable.
My other friends, whom I'll refer to as S, C, and H, agreed to the spontaneous idea.
We asked M where we should meet up.
Strangely, he swiftly responded, claiming he couldn't make it,
despite being the one who suggested trick-or-treating.
However, he recommended a house rumored to be laden with delectable treats.
Within half an hour, S, C, H, and I arrived at the house.
A sizable table adorned the front porch, flaunting a pumpkin-shaped bowl brimming with lollipops.
After cautiously checking the windows to ensure we weren't under surveillance,
we emptied the bowl among ourselves, leaving a few lollipops behind to avoid arousing suspicion.
As we turned to leave, our departure was interrupted by the eerie presence of two men dressed as clowns, approaching us with painted smiles and tilted heads.
The sight sent shivers down our spines,
and one of my friends let out a piercing scream as they began chasing us, their rubber noses squeaking with each step.
We sprinted for what felt like an eternity until we finally managed to shake off our pursuers.
Seeking solace and safety, we decided to gather at M's house to discuss the unnerving incident.
However, when M answered the door, he burst into laughter, utterly perplexed by our presence.
Confused, I reminded him that he had suggested we go trick-or-treating, pleading to be let inside.
After settling on M's couch, we soon realized that M had lost his phone earlier that day,
and the suggestion to visit that particular house had come from a stranger—a potential trap orchestrated by the clowns.
After another half-hour, I cautiously made my way home by 9:30 p.m.
I finished watching my movie and ventured outside to collect the candy bowl I had meticulously arranged.
To my shock, the bowl was completely empty,
but my stomach churned
when I noticed a clown nose nestled within it.
I immediately recounted the entire ordeal to my parents,
showcasing the clown nose left at our doorstep.
They assured me it was merely a Halloween prank.
Around 1 a.m., I awoke to the sound of rocks hitting my bedroom window.
Though paralyzed with fear, curiosity overcame me,
and I mustered the courage to open the blinds.
My Halloween decorations lay scattered and destroyed on the ground below.
I stood motionless, utterly shocked until a lollipop came hurtling towards the window, shattering my trance.
I glanced up and saw them—two clowns perched on my neighbor's roof, peering down at me.
I screamed and fled towards my parents' room.
Skipping the details that followed, the police were called, but the clowns
were never found.
The officers assured us they would investigate the house we had trick-or-treated at, and they departed within half an hour.
The next morning, we learned that the house was abandoned,
and M's phone was discovered inside.
At school the following day,
I discovered that M, S, C, and H had all encountered eerie experiences during the night.
Whether the clowns had followed us home
or managed to track us through M's phone, I cannot say.
All I know is that Halloween
is just a few weeks away,
and I am paralyzed by fear,
dreading their potential return.
