The Sinister Halloween Night

A few years ago, on a spooky Halloween night,

a close friend of mine and I had planned to indulge in the classic tradition of trick-or-treating.

We were both twelve years old at the time,

a perfect age to roam the neighborhood without our parents.

The excitement of exploring the houses and collecting candy fueled our anticipation.

As the night progressed, our bags grew fuller with treats.

However, as the hour grew late, around 9 p.m., many houses began switching off their lights,

signaling an end to the festivities.

My friend suggested heading back, but my stubbornness urged us to seize every last opportunity.

We agreed to visit one last cul-de-sac before calling it a night.

Our neighborhood, though pleasant, suffered from a lack of streetlights,

which made it increasingly challenging to navigate as darkness enveloped us.

Suddenly, out of nowhere,

we noticed the silhouette of a man approaching us.

Unlike the other trick-or-treaters, he appeared to be a solitary adult.

As we neared him, we realized he was a police officer.

He introduced himself and pointed out a house further down the road,

cautioning us that an older man residing there had been attempting to lure trick-or-treaters inside.

The officer explained that someone had reported this to the police, prompting his presence.

Throughout our brief conversation,

the officer repeatedly mentioned that his police car was nearby, pointing in a random direction.

Even at our young age, the encounter felt unnerving and unnatural.

But what he said next caught us completely off guard.

He requested our assistance in apprehending the man.

Because he was a police officer, the man wouldn't open the door for him.

However, if we were to knock on the door, the officer believed the man would likely open it.

Once the man attempted to lure us inside,

the officer planned to jump out of the bushes and catch him in the act.

My friend and I exchanged bewildered glances, both rendered speechless.

The officer's request was outrageous,

especially considering our tender age.

He was essentially asking two twelve-year-old children he had just met to act as bait.

We remained silent for a while, unable to respond.

Eventually, the officer broke the silence, insisting that we act quickly.

Despite my inner resistance,

I couldn't find the courage to refuse his request.

Just then, a large group of teenagers turned the corner and headed in our direction.

Sensing an opportunity, the officer excused himself,

promising to return shortly, and disappeared into the darkness.

As the group of teenagers approached us, one of them asked if we knew the officer.

We explained the bizarre situation, and their concern was evident.

They offered to escort us back home, an offer we gratefully accepted.

And with that, the incident came to an end.

My friend and I decided not to share the experience with others,

but as the years passed,

I began to regret not making a greater fuss and reporting the incident to the police.

We still wonder whether the man we encountered was a genuine police officer.

The older I become,

the more convinced I am that he wasn't.

Regardless, placing two twelve-year-old children in such a potentially dangerous situation was unacceptable,

whether he was a law enforcement officer or not.

I can't help but wonder what the man's true motives were.

The thought still haunts me,

and I'm left

with a lingering sense of unease.
