When I was 13 years old, I had the opportunity to stay the night at my friend Tommy's farmhouse. It was an exciting prospect, as I was one of the two friends invited to sleep over after Tommy's birthday party. Our anticipation peaked when we planned a night swim in his massive pool. Tommy's farmhouse, nestled in the embrace of nature, was home to cows, goats, and the highlight of the property – a splendid pool that shimmered under the moonlight.
As darkness set in, we changed swiftly into our swimsuits and eagerly immersed ourselves in the cool waters of the pool. Laughter and splashes filled the air as we reveled in the joy of being young and carefree. The night seemed perfect, until it took an unexpected turn.
I stood on Tommy's back deck, drying off, and glanced toward the vast cornfield that marked the edge of his property. Strangely, a few cornstalks seemed to sway as if something had just rushed through them. Intrigued, I focused my attention on the cornfield when an eerie owl's hoot behind me nearly startled me out of my skin.
Turning around, I was mesmerized by a single owl perched on the deck's post, its eyes piercing into my soul. It was a rare sight, and I found myself captivated, almost in a trance. Tommy, realizing the urgency of the situation, urgently grabbed my shoulder, urging us to get inside. Confused by his sudden urgency, I heard Tommy say, "There's something in the cornfield," as we rushed into the safety of the house, locking the door behind us.
Once inside, I pressed Tommy for an explanation. He revealed that he always found night swimming a bit scary because he felt like something was always watching him from the cornfield. Skeptical, I glanced out of the kitchen window, facing the cornfield. At first, I saw nothing unusual, but then, in the same area I had noticed earlier, the corn seemed to be in motion.
I pointed this out to Tommy, and together we fixated on that specific section. Minutes passed with no further sign of movement, and I began to doubt my own perception. Suddenly, our friend Derek gasped loudly. Rushing over, we saw him back away from the window, his face pale and clearly disturbed. As we asked him what he saw, the terror struck us too.
Stepping back to let Tommy see, we all watched in horror as a figure, resembling a grown man, emerged from the cornfield. He didn't venture far into the yard but seemed to be scanning his surroundings for something. Fear gripped us as we watched his head swivel back and forth, his intentions unclear. Unable to identify him, we decided it was time to involve Tommy's parents.
Tommy's father, witnessing the unsettling scene, was both furious and concerned for our safety. He immediately rushed outside to confront the man, while instructing us to stay inside. Taking charge until the police arrived, Tommy's dad demanded answers from the intruder. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, there wasn't enough evidence to charge the neighbor with any wrongdoing. However, a restraining order was issued, requiring him to stay far away from Tommy's house and the cornfield.
The incident left us shaken and filled with a sense of unease. That night, we all retreated to our own homes, seeking the comfort and security of our familiar surroundings. I tried discussing the events of that night with Tommy, but even though the neighbor wasn't charged, the restraining order provided a measure of relief, keeping the unsettling events and the enigmatic figure in the cornfield at bay.
